About Us

We are a father and son team, Dave and Luke Rider, from Oregon who have created International Salt Menu. We have taken it upon ourselves to improve the health of the people around the globe. We chose to address a major health concern—kidney and heart disease caused in part by the overconsumption of salt.

We chose SALT. Salt has for thousands of years been the primary spice used in food preservation, preparation, and final touches to meals. Over the years, more and more varieties of salt have been harvested or infused by resourceful people. Most people have only had a few of these salts. We aim to change that and bring salt sampling and enjoyment to a new level with the added dimension of moderation in the use of salt. There are over 100 varieties of salt.

IMPORTANT RESEARCH CONSIDERATION

Salt has gotten some necessary bad press regarding its overuse, especially in the United States. It is stated by the FDA that the average person uses about 3400 mg of salt daily and recommends this be reduced to 2300 mg. The American Heart Association recommends 1500 mg per day would be even better. Kidney and heart disease is often linked to overconsumption of Sodium, primarily delivered via salt.

IMPORTANT RESEARCH INFORMATION

Salt has gotten some necessary bad press regarding its overuse, especially in the United States. It is stated by the FDA that the average person uses about 3400 mg of salt daily and recommends this be reduced to 2300 mg. Some experts suggest 1500 mg would be even better. Kidney and heart disease is often linked to overconsumption of Sodium, primarily delivered via salt.

So, in our research, we have discovered that the higher quality sea salts and infused sea salts deliver a very intense flavor in small quantities when applied after cooking, thereby potentially reducing salt consumed by up to two thirds.

Since salt is necessary in moderate quantities, we reasoned that if the chef can deliver lowered sodium options which we have coined “Controlled Sodium™” or “CS™”, then the consumer can use small portions of high-quality finishing salts, greatly reducing their Sodium intake, and yet experience exciting new taste sensations. We believe International Salt Menu will make a significant health difference by letting the consumer determine the quantity of salt they consume.

A direct quote from the American Heart Association found on a FACT SHEET, Salt of the Earth Reducing Sodium in the US Diet (updated 04/2020) reads: “One in 10 Cardiovascular deaths worldwide have been attributed to consuming too much sodium. High sodium intake is associated with high blood pressure. About 1 in 3 adults living in the U.S. have high blood pressure and only half have their blood pressure under control. Alarmingly, many youth are also being diagnosed with high blood pressure. This common condition increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, two leading causes of death in the U.S.

One in 10 cardiovascular deaths have been attributed to sodium intake of greater than 2,000 milligrams a day. On average, that level is exceeded by 99.2 % of the world’s adults. In the U.S., it is estimated that 66,508 deaths…were attributed to high sodium diets.

The American Heart Association advocates for a multifaceted, stepwise reduction in sodium consumption in the diet. The association further recommends a simultaneous commitment by the food and restaurant industries to reduce the amount of salt added to the food supply.”

“Approximately 41 percent of U.S. adults are projected to have hypertension by 2030.”

Under the heading “ECONOMIC AND HEALTH BENEFITS” this article goes on to say: “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed voluntary targets for processed and commercially prepared foods. If those targets were achieved, it could prevent approximately 450,000 cases of cardiovascular disease, gain approximately 2.1 million discounted quality- adjusted life years and produce discounted cost savings (health savings minus policy costs) of approximately $41 billion.”

There is a myriad of thorough research papers on the topic. The bottom line is that more creative, “boots on the ground” efforts are needed to turn the tide on this health epidemic that is devastating our population.

International Salt Menu’s motto is “AT THE HEART OF A NEW HEALTH MOVEMENT”, and we want people to choose wisely the foods they eat and how much salt THEY add to their Controlled Sodium TM food and drink items.

We hope you will join us in this important and entertaining way to reduce the quantity and raise the quality and taste of the salt you consume.
